Colour of the Year 2020

Jan 20, 2020 | Blog

It’s that time of year again! For us colour addicts, the most anticipated announcement in the world of colour has been revealed. The Pantone Colour of the Year 2020: 19-4502 Classic Blue.

For over 20 years, the Pantone Colour Institute have been tasked with predicting the top global colour trends across a variety of industries; including fashion, design and branding. Through a blend of trend analysis, colour psychology, and colour consultation, the Pantone Colour Institute leverage the power, psychology, and emotion of colour in their design strategy.

Seemingly unadventurous compared with last year’s Living Coral, Classic Blue leads us into a new decade; symbolising protection, stability, peace and confidence.

“Blue, from an emotional, psychological standpoint, has always represented a certain amount of calm and dependability. It’s a colour that you can rely on” Eiseman explains.

Inspired by our current climate, where technology continues to race ahead of the human ability, the calming, familiar shade of azure stimulates open mindfulness, deep thinking and communication: a universal favourite.

To amplify the 2020 reveal, Pantone included a clever twist of its own. As part of its marketing campaign, they teamed up with several brands to develop the smell, sound, taste, and texture of Classic Blue. The resulting package included a swatch of suede-like fabric from the Inside, a musk-and-sea-salt-scented candle, a blue, berry-flavoured jelly, and a three-minute audio track titled “Vivid Nostalgia.”
