It’s that time of year again and the Dulux Colour of the Year 2019 has been revealed. It’s a warm amber shade they’re calling ‘Spiced Honey’. If you weren’t ready for autumn, you will be now! It’s autumnal, versatile and certainly a far cry from the cool, desaturated shades we’ve seen Instagram awash with over recent years.
The Dulux Colour of the Year 2019 announcement has had a pretty polarised reaction. In my opinion, it’s classic, sophisticated and a little heritage. In other words, I am sold! Although that’s probably no surprise with my love for a rich colour palette and camel tones being a firm player in my wardrobe!
‘Spiced Honey’ indicates positivism, purpose, and transformation. It’s a meaningful notion we can all relate to, inspired by the beauty and versatility of honey itself and the perfect hue to enhance wellbeing through interior design.
“Every year, we seek to transform a trend into a colour that responds to consumer needs and enables them to bring a mood, affecting their life, in to their homes”, says Heleen van Gent, head of the Global Aesthetic Centre and chair of the ColourFutures™ panel of experts.
Using Dulux Colour of the Year 2019 in your home
In addition to Colour of the Year 2019, the Dulux panel has spoilt us with four ‘to die for’ colour palettes too! Each palette is based around a theme: to think, to dream, to love, to act. Whilst the colours aren’t new, the combinations definitely feel fresh and innovative.
“Spiced Honey has a raw, natural quality that works like a warm neutral, which makes it so adaptable to pairing with different materials and styles of decoration”, explains Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director for the Dulux brand in the UK.
Warm Neutrals – A space to think
The ‘Think’ palette consists of sophisticated neutrals, burgundy, and deep blue. It works particularly well in the kitchen or dining room. For instance, polished woods and mid-century inspired furniture will amplify a refined and elegant concept.
Soft Pastels – A space to dream
The ‘Dream’ palette is a soft and soothing combination of romantic powder pinks and blue. Lighter coloured woods and the layering of simple, textured fabrics will enhance the meditative and tranquil feeling of calm. It’s the perfect combination to create a place where you can kick back and relax.
Intense Pigments – A space to love
The warmest palette of all four is ‘Love’. Think strong, pigmented autumnal shades we’ve seen popping up as we near the colder months. Deep burgundy, intense terracotta and rust shades teamed with deep forest green and muted hues, create a warm and cosy space to spend time with loved ones.
Bold Brights – A space to act
Orange, yellow, blue, green and a stabilizing white make up the ‘Act’ palette. It’s playful, fun and unpredictable. Use Spiced Honey as a base colour and incorporate clean lines, graphic shapes, and pops of vivid colour. Perfect for a child’s bedroom, games room or office space, this palette will create a modern, stimulating space.
